Vanilla Mescaline

So I bet you didn't know you could synthesise Mescaline from Vanillin, aka as Vanilla Essence? Not only that but you can synthesise other compounds such as Pseudoephedrine, the precursor to Meth! :P Perhaps one day the restrictions will become so terrible in this country that the bikeys will turn to vanilla for their ghetto chemistry >.<"





The basic process:


Vanillin + NaOH(aq) + NaI3.NaI + H2SO4 -> 5-iodovanillin (99% yield)

5-iodovanillin + NaOH + Cu -> 5-hydroxyvanillin (99% yield, iodine can be recovered)

5-hydroxyvanillin + acetone + dimethylsulfate + Na2CO3.H2O + KOH -> 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde (94% yield )

3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde + nitromethane + ammonium acetate -> 3,4,5-trimethoxynitrostyrene

3,4,5-trimethoxynitrostyrene + Pd/C + EtOH + HCl -> mescaline

The product:
Mescaline HCl/Mescaline crystals
